How Are You Nourishing? How was your week?

It has been a whirlwind week around here and I'm feeling it this Friday!  Re-entry back into a full schedule of school, early mornings, extra early mornings for workouts, work, volunteer commitments, sports practices, carpool, food prepping and cooking.  You know the drill!  This is when we all need to take care of ourselves, rest and and do more than just feed ourselves.  We need to really nourish ourselves.I've been thinking about that recently and really put that at the forefront of making my food choices.  I have been focusing on not only what I am eating, but why, when, how much how that choice truly nourishes me. The definition of nourish is:(nûr′ĭsh)tr.v. nour·ished, nour·ish·ing, nour·ish·es1. To provide with food or other substances necessary for life and growth; feed.2. To foster the development of; promote: "Athens was an imperial city, nourished by the tribute of subjects" (V. Gordon Childe).3. To keep alive; maintain: nourish a hope.I have not been NOT eating things, but adding more "good stuff" into the day and find that there is no room or want for other things.  A couple of good changes, for me, have been to eliminate dairy, other than the occasional greek yogurt or a cottage cheese serving for protein.  I've also gotten out of "vacation" mode and eliminated wine during the week.  Just those changes have been good changes for me.  (I am not down on dairy or advising against it - I am just less bloated and feel better without it.)  I've also noticed a lack of sugar cravings which is HUGE for me.  If you know me, you know I would normally forego a meal for dessert!  Here's a perfect example:Yesterday, I baked two particularly yummy, moist, gooey chocolate cakes for the second son's football dinner.  They call them Lucky cakes.  I'm not sure how lucky they are, but they definitely delicious and are NOT healthy and full of lots of sugar, sour cream, eggs, vanilla and chocolate chips.  I baked and sliced up two cakes and was not even tempted to taste a piece.  How about that? One of the health and fitness magazines I regularly receive has a monthly topic where they look at what some celebrity or other well known person eats for the day.  A nutritionist looks at the day and gives  pointers on the choices and weighs in on how the person did as far as getting enough water, protein, healthy carbs and overall calorie intake.  I'm taking a look at some of the things I used this week to nourish myself.  I did not think of any of the foods in terms of calories or good foods or bad foods, but more what I needed or wanted.  Did I need protein?  Did I need more water?  Was I actually hungry? Here are some of my nourishments this week:IMG_0099IMG_0203IMG_0210IMG_0172FullSizeRender copyIMG_0223IMG_0173These are some of the eats I've had for the past two weeks.  While I've not really craved sugar I have had a square of dark chocolate now and then.  Not pictured are the evening meals around the table which is part of feeding the family and nourishing the soul.  Another part of eating is sharing and celebrating with friends.  Not pictured is a wonderful sushi dinner shared with friends over the weekend.  It all works together to feed our bodies and nourish us for all that we need to do each day.  Let's focus on nourishing ourselves to do more than make our bellies full.  Let's think about how what we eat affects us, feeds muscles, feeds the brain, provides energy and hydrates us.How did I do?  What grade would I get?  How are you feeding yourself?  Are you not only feeding but nourishing yourself?Enjoy Your Day!Signature
