What's Up in the 2015 Fitness World?
I was working with a client the other day and she asked me about my Polar Loop fitness tracker. (Have I said how much I love it? I recently took a look at some of the trackers here. There are even more on the market today and are even fancier than a few months ago.) Then she asked me if I thought the fitness trackers were a fad or here to stay. Well, so glad you asked, because that leads me to looking at the fitness trends for 2015. What I see as new, what's gonna stay or what to expect:1. The fitness gadgets will be big this year. The FitBits, Garmon, Jawbone and the other trackers out there are here and will keep getting fine tuned and continue to grow. We are a competitive bunch of humans so keeping track of steps, activity and calories, and then comparing them with our spouse, tennis partner and online community is the incentive that keeps us going.2. Online workouts and Fitness Apps will remain a great option and continue to grow. At the touch of a fingertip you can find great workouts from online coaching sites, YouTube videos and even Pinterest options - and these can all be free! Then there are the workouts you can get with a touch of your fingertip on your phone! And then you can get those same workouts on your smartphone AND use a Fitness App to get in your workout. Here's a perfect example - recently, while on vacation, I was working out in a fitness center. A young girl was on the mat beside me going through some great looking Pilates leg work. Then I noticed she was watching her phone and doing the workout from her phone. How smart was she?I know a lot of people who use fitness Apps for great workouts. NIKE has one that always gets great reviews and there are tons available at the touch of that same little finger. I do have a Yoga App on my phone that I can use to put me through the poses when I need. It seems that if you have a phone, you have no excuse for not getting in a workout!3. Boutique and Specialized Workout Gyms are here AND big gyms take notice. We've seen the whole boutique gyms take off. The special gyms for spinning like FlyWheel and SoulCycle, the gyms offering Bar classes like PureBarre, barre3, Barre Concept and the like. There are studios for yoga, hot yoga and Pilates. I'm not sure CrossFit belongs in this category (as it's in a category all to itself!), but the CrossFit Boxes are similar in that they are gyms offering a certain kind of workout. Trying to keep in line with this trend, many of the big box gyms have begun offering specialized classes like the boutique gyms.4. High Intensity workouts still rock. HIIT workouts were big in 2014 and because they are so effective will continue to be even more popular. These workouts are so wonderful because you can get in and get out. You can do so many different moves and combinations that boredom just isn't an option. Any age and any fitness level can see success with high intensity workouts. Along these same lines, bodyweight training has become really popular and is here to stay. No equipment necessary and can be done anywhere. Again, no excuse not to get in the workout.5. Group Fitness, big or small, will keep folks coming. Whether it's a group fitness class, a bootcamp class or a small training group, group fitness will continue to be popular. One on one training is expensive, so the affordability, as well as the social aspect and accountability, make this type of workout smart and one that will continue to be popular.6. Focus on recovery from these workouts is important and folks know it. Whether it's a yoga class, a massage, self massages with balls, bands, sticks or foam rolling, will continue to keep people exercising and in the game. Exercise isn't just for the young anymore, and as the population gets older and continues to keep moving, recovery will be key in staying healthy.7. Smarter workouts will continue to grow in popularity. The focus on shorter and more intense workouts will continue. No more slogging on the treadmill for hours - with no results. The science supports short, bodyweight workouts using multiple muscles and these will continue. Some intense workouts will be only 4 - 8 minutes, but the difference is the intensity. Again, no excuse for skipping a workout!8. Workout clothes will still be really cool! Workout clothes have come a looooonng way. These days dressing for a workout can really be fun. There are so many fun, comfortable and funtcionable things out there it makes you want to get to your gym just to wear the outfit! Or, at least dress as if you are going to workout . . . and maybe that'll get you there . . .These are some of the things I see ahead for 2015. Nothing too surprising. I think we'll continue to talk about fitness and exercise and continue to use our time wisely as well as use our bodies wisely with different workouts and cross training. I see fitness continuing to be more about functioning and living and less about looking like a magazine cover. I'm excited to see all the success that 2015 will bring! What are your predictions? Anything you wish would go away? Anything you wish would move ahead more? Do you wear a fitness tracker? Which one? Do you think it adds to your fitness?Enjoy the day!
