Eat Healthy without Breaking the Bank

I have really been on a mission to save money lately.  Part of that challenge is to force myself to not alway go for what is convenient and take the extra step to get more bang for my buck.  There has always been an argument that it cost more money to eat healthy.  I’m here to tell you that just isn’t so.  You can find good, fresh and healthy foods almost anywhere!  Whole Foods does not have the hold on healthy foods.  I think you can find real foods to eat regardless of where you live.

I made a weekly grocery run yesterday – but not at my normal and more convenient grocery store.  Instead, I took an extra few minutes to  go to Walmart.  For under $100 I got enough food for three meals for the week as well as fresh fruits and vegetables and a few not so healthy items for my boys. Here’s some of what I got:

Boneless Chicken breasts for White Chicken Chile, along with the ingredients.  I will us two of the chicken breasts to cook and shred for tacos.

2 packages of Organic Grass Fed Beef, one for tacos and one for spaghetti sauce, Organic mixed greens for salads during the week, 2 avocados (because a portion of them almost daily!), cucumber, grape tomatoes, bagged chopped salad for lunches, brussel sprouts, fresh green beans, chopped pineapple, oranges, raspberries, strawberries, and apples.

I also show half and half because I have it for my coffee in the mornings and is the one dairy I have to have.  While I could not get Ezekial bread that I use to  make avocado toast, I found a sprouted Eureka bread to try in its place. As you can see I was also out of detergent, so I have a bag of Gain on the  counter.  Not pictured are  a few not so healthy items, like garlic knot bread, a couple of snacks for the boys and tortillas and shells for tacos, bottled water, bottled sports drinks and a gallon each of milk and chocolate milk.

All in all I’m feeling pretty good about the healthy options I found at WalMart!  I’m feeling even better about the price!  It was worth driving the extra few minutes. . .

Where do you do most of your shopping?  Tied to one store?  What do you think about the argument that healthy foods are more expensive?
