I drink tons of water. In fact, other than the coffee I have in the mornings, it is typically the only thing I drink during the day. When I get tired of plain water I add lemon slices for a little flavor. While I was following the Dr. Oz 10 Day Program, I also began drinking warm lemon water. Little did I know how great this one easy little addition to my day is for me! Now I rarely have water without lemon in it. I have also begun chugging down a glass of lemon water before that first cup of coffee. I make it very painless . . . and will tell you that secret after I share the 10 Best Reasons you should be adding Lemon to your water . . .
First of all, let me tell you that lemons are loaded with nutrients, including vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and fiber. In fact, lemons have more potassium than those apples and grapes in your fridge.
1. Boosts Your Immune System
When you are stressed vitamin C in your system drops and that causes your immune system to be compromised. Lemons are full of vitamin C so will keep your immune system up and running.
2. Provides Potassium
The potassium is good for your heart, brain and nerve functions.
3. Helps Digestion
The lemons in your lemon water help loosen toxins in the digestive tract and relieve indigestion, heartburn and bloating – as well as burping. If only the Third Son would drink this stuff!
4. Cleanses Your System
It helps stimulate your liver by flushing your body with enhancing enzyme function.
5. Freshens your breath.
It also helps relieve toothaches and gingivitis but since the citric acid is tough on your tooth enamel make sure it is diluted in water and avoid brushing your teeth right after drinking or brush beforehand.
6. Helps your Skin
The antioxidants in lemon juice help to not only decrease blemishes, but also wrinkles. (Really??) It can also be applied to scars and age spots to help lighten them. Since it is detoxifying your blood, it will maintain your skin’s radiance.
7. Helps you lose weight.
Lemons contain pectin fiber, which assists in fighting hunger cravings. I can attest to this one first hand!
8. Reduces inflammation.
If you drink lemon water on a regular basis, it will decrease the acidity in your body, which is where disease states occur. It removes uric acid in your joints, which is one of the main causes of inflammation. (If you or someone you know suffers gout, please tell them to add lemon water to their daily routine to help flush out the uric acid build up)
9. Gives an Energy Boost
Maybe it’s the fresh scent but the lemon juice helps give the body energy when it enters the body.
10. Helps to Cut Caffeine
Drinking a cup of warm lemon water in the afternoons has been a big bonus. It makes me feel refreshed and perks me up from that afternoon crash. It is also much better than reaching for some snack I really don’t need or an afternoon cup of coffee.
11. Helps fight viral infections.
Warm lemon water is the most effective way to diminish viral infections and subsequent sore throats. Plus, with the lemon juice also boosting your immune system, you can fight off infection completely. I’m no doctor here, and hate to jinx this, but I normally get a horrible sinus infection every single February. Somehow I bypassed that this year, and I have been mostly healthy without the sniffles and sore throats I tend to catch.
So, how’s that for an easy way to boost your health?
My secret to drinking room temp lemon water first thing in the morning is pretty simple – and lazy. I always go to bed with an insulated cup of lemon water by my bed (think Tervus Tumbler). When I get out of bed I just grab it and drink it down first thing. It really does the trick because you are typically dehydrated from going all night with no hydration, you are boosting your system the minute your feet hit the floor and you immediately begin your day with at least one healthy habit. Not only are the benefits of lemon water endless, it’s one of the easiest yet most impactful changes you can make for your health.
What do you think? Are you a lemon lover? Already added this trick to your day? Will you give it a try?
Enjoy Your Day!
