The Biggest Key to Meeting those Goals, Resolutions, Intentions . . .

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 8.00.48 AMIt’s that time of year – when lots of folks are making plans to get healthy, get fit, lose weight, make resolutions and goals.  The other day I was asked about the biggest tip to keeping a New Year goal.  Well, let me be the first to say that I am no expert.  In fact, this year I have made a conscience decision to NOT make resolutions that I know will be kicked to the curb.  Rather,  I have set out some Intentions that I will strive toward daily.  More on that here.  However, whether you call them Resolutions, Intentions or Goals, you, like me,  will have to stay focused and diligent to make them stick.  And, yes, one of my intentions this year is to truly focus on my health.  While health is always in my mind and is something I am passionate about, I admit that my healthy habits have gotten off track lately and it shows.  While I do strive to live a healthy lifestyle, I am human and have allowed all sorts of things to knock me off the path over the past few months.  And, of course, the Holidays always offer a new set of challenges . . .

As this new year begins I am really excited about getting back on track with healthy, clean eating habits and get my exercise routine back where it should be.  I am making a conscience decision not to beat myself up or worry about the number on the scale while thinking of cleaning up my act.  I know how much better I will feel when I clean out all the junk in our house and begin making sure food decisions are healthy.  I also am not going to go crazy in the gym or begin beating up my body to get my fitness level back.  I’m really excited about beginning anew with good habits to get back to simply being the best me.

But, back to the questions of how to make sure to meet these goals – The key to making sure all this comes together is . . . consistency.  I think that will be the most important factor in keeping my own health intentions up front and getting me to my goals.  Consistency is defined as “The state or condition of always happening or behaving in the same way.”  If we make sure that we are consistent in making our decisions to honor our goals we can take those steps, even if they are baby steps, toward reaching that goal.

Consistency is that key to meeting any goal, whether it’s to lose weight, perfect a sport, learn a new language, read more books,  find time to knit,  or whatever else it is that one is striving to master.  I think it’s also the key in  meeting those other goals we often set, such as being more patient, taking time for yourself, appreciating each day, or other self improvement type of goals.

Just be consistent.  Keep at it.  Try it every day.  Do it again the next day.  Repeat it again the next day and then the next week.  Those consistent actions will become habits and a part of your everyday.  They will be you.

That’s my simple answer to meeting those goals.  What do you think?

What do you think is the most important thing?  What is your key?  How is your new year so far?

Enjoy Today!
