I have to admit our Thanksgiving menu has really changed in the forty something years I’ve been around.  My family has always been very traditional about the foods at the Thanksgiving table.  We did make a change when The Husband joined the family and added macaroni and cheese to the menu.  Big step.  I love having these same foods every year.  There’s something comforting about knowing what will be on the table and then there’s the anticipation since we only have these foods at this one occasion during the year.

While I do love these tried and true dishes, I also have to admit that I have tweaked them just a bit throughout the last couple of year.  Gone are the canned sweet potatoes for fresh cooked and mashed ones.  Gone is the Velveeta cheese and frozen broccoli in the Broccoli Rice Casserole.  What exactly is Velveeta anyway?  Does anyone know?  I introduced a new dressing with Kale, of all things, in it last year.  Before you roll your eyes, I’m telling y ou it was a beautiful and delicious hit!  It’s coming back this year!

Today I have a few of our recipes from our menu to share.  If you are looking to try something new, re-do something old or add another dish to your table, just know that any of these are tried and loved by us!

BROCCOLI RICE SALAD

WINTER CITRUS SALAD

CORN BREAD STUFFING WITH BACON AND GREENS

PUMPKIN BANANA MOUSSE TART

Another all time favorite on the table is Sweet Potato Souffle.  Now I know there are two camps on this dish.  The marshmallow topping and the pecan topping.  We have always been the pecan topping and I love, love, love this dish!  Of course, the recipe that’s been handed down to me is LOADED with fat and calories.  Here is a version that is really close to my old recipe, but just as tasty AND allows you to have over two servings for the same calories as one of the old recipe.  And it’s the pecan, brown sugar crumble topping that I believe just makes this dish!

 SWEET POTATO SOUFFLE

For out turkey this year, we are having a brined turkey cooked on The Big Green Egg.  We tried this last year and it was one of the best turkeys we’ve had.  Of course, my boys loved it because it was covered in bacon!

ROASTED BRINED TURKEY WITH ONION GRAVY AND BACON

Those are some of the favorites that will be at our table this year.  Think that’s enough?  The boys have decided they also want a ham . . .

I’m also looking at this decadent chocolate dessert on the cover of this month’s Cooking Light magazine.  Doesn’t it look worth a try?
