Shopping for the Summer . . .because you can’t get to the gym

I have the entire house to myself for three days.  I’ve never been alone in my home for that long and I had a huge list of things to get done, being on my own schedule and time.  I planned to throw in some afternoon walks, workouts and enjoy the time.  However, it all began with a small tickle in my throat and slowly spread to an entire body of aches and a throat so raw I couldn’t think of swallowing.  Who gets sick in the summer?  How do I make it through the worst winter in years feeling great and get a bug now?  So, I’m spending some quality time lounging in yoga pants watching American Hustle on the sofa with my dogs.  Wow, I love those 70’s outfits in this movie!

I’m quite happy, though, because I’ve looked at some great at home products that I either have and love or are on my wish list.  I’ve had some moms tell me how hard it is to get in a workout in the summer because they are off their normal schedule, they have children home so they cannot get to their gym or their normal classes don’t meet.  Whatever the reason, the summer and lack of a normal schedule can be a wonderful thing, but can also make folks be a little more creative in getting in exercise.

Here are a few super items to have at home to get you through the summer.

You don’t have to have a home gym or even a lot of space to get in a workout.  A few things I like to have and use begin with kettlebells.  These come in different weights.  I would suggest going with a little heavier than you think you would like as they can be lifted with both hands at the same time.  They add great total body work engaging lots of different muscles and your core.  If you are bored with using plain old dumbbells then these are great to try.  There are some great UTube videos that can give you great ideas to add to your workout routine.

I think I have a BlenderBottle with me at all times.  It’s the perfect size to keep chugging water all day.  It’s also perfect for a smoothie.
Swimming is one of the best exercised out there.  It’s a total body workout, hitting so many muscles. This is the perfect time to get in the water for a low impact, but great cardiovascular exercise.
The Bosu is one of my very favorite tools.  There are so many things you can do on a Bosu.  Balance training, abdominal work, upper body and lower body strengthening.  It’s genius!!  I am having to replace mine as some mystery person somehow ruined mine beyond my ability to fix.  Those meddling kids . . . .
A foam roller is another best ever things.  I can’t imagine why I didn’t think of this myself!  It’s the best tool to basically give yourself a massage. I’ve been fighting with a tight IT band lately, probably because I was not using the roller enough.  Now it is my best friend.
My last item to share today is the Polar Loop Activiy Tracker.  I’ve talked about this in a recent post and after comparing the hottest fitness trackers, this is the one I want!  I’m hoping to treat myself soon so I can keep track for the summer.  I’m sure you’ll hear about it!

What’s your summer routine like?  Is it easier or harder to get in your workout?  Do you have a favorite at home tool?  Have you seen American Hustle?  Do you remember wearing those hot curlers?

Have some fun!
