Needing Motivation . . .

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball that makes doing what you normally “just do” or love doing seem like such a chore.  That’s where I was last week and maybe this week, too.  We’ll just have to see how it goes.
What I normally “just do” is exercise.  There is nothing for  me like endorphins to get me going.  That might not work for some, but I do know it works wonders for many of us.  I am normally self-motivated and don’t need someone telling me what to do or pumping me up.  Well, not so right now.
Therefore, last week I decided to take advantage of some free time (all three boys were at camps or off on that one last beach trip) and some of the other workouts Atlanta has to offer.
I don’t usually pay extra to exercise, as I have access to gyms and classes and will work on my own.  However, there are a lot of cool classes and “boutique” gyms out there.  So, here are some different things I tried and appreciated someone else telling me what to do, how to work and motivating me.

* Flywheel Spinning class – this is a boutique spin gym that offers fairly intense spin classes.  The music is cool, the instructors encouraging and the bikes a bit different from the normal spin bikes.  They allow you to actually see your numbers, RPMs and power.  It’s like spinning on speed.

* Hot Yoga – This is 75 – 90 minutes of yoga done in 105 degree heat.  (This is a post in itself, as is taking off your soaking wet workout clothes after the class.  Any tips on that?)  Living in the South, it’s been pretty hot so you know you are in some heat when you walk outside and it actually feels cold!  Also, I’m thinking that as long as you live in the South, you can do Hot Yoga, even if there isn’t a studio in your area.  Just take your mat to your garage and you’ll immediately begin sweating – at no charge!

* Walking with a friend – I often do this, but it was especially good to have a time set to make me get out the door.  We walked at a good pace for over an hour, covered some hills, and as she has really long legs, had me huffing and puffing.

* Worked with a trainer – I horned in on the Husband’s workout with his trainer.  Again, it was really good to have someone else put me through the paces and tell  me what to do.  I believe if you are just starting out, in a rut, or need that extra push, a few sessions with a trainer might be just what you need.  It may seem a bit decadent to pay someone to get you to work out, but even if it is for just a couple of sessions it can help get you on track and into a regular workout routine.

So, that’s what got me moving and through last week.  I learned that sometimes it’s perfectly okay to let someone else take charge.

What motivates you this week?  Do you like to take charge or let others?

Have some fun this week!
